BMW has introduced the 2013 BMW X6 "Life-Cycle Impulse" (LCI) range in Australia, bringing a number of mid-life updates to the big five-door coupe SUV.

The updated line-up is also joined by the new X6 M50d, creating a new option for buyers seeking the fuel economy of a diesel engine and the enhanced performance brought by BMW's M division.

The X6 M50d arrives alongside its performance twin in the X5 range, the X5 M50d.

Updates to the regular 2013 X6 'LCI' range includes subtly revised styling, along with updated specifications that include five seats and internet connectivity both as standard.

Adaptive LED headlights are also fitted as standard, and the powerbulged bonnet fitted as standard on the X6 M and X6 M50d is available as an option for the lesser variants.

There's new 19-inch light alloy wheels for the six-cylinder models, and 20-inch wheels for the X6 xDrive50i.

Colour options for the range has been extended to include three new colours: Marrakesh Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic.

The standard leather trim Nevada is now also available in Vermilion Red, and the nappa leather option now offers a choice between Black and Ivory White.

The M Sport Plus package is also available, adding 20-inch M wheels in double spoke design and bi-colour finish with mixed tyres, adaptive LED headlamps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, black surrounds for the fog lights and M door sill cover strips.

Interior features in the M Sport Plus pack includes sports seats, M-specific Alcantara/Nappa leather combination in black with M-style welt and contrast stitching as a no cost option, M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, stainless steel pedals, interior strips in Aluminium Flywheel black and the BMW Individual roof liner in anthracite.

Mechanically, the updated X6 continues with its existing powertrain line-up, including the xDrive50i's 300kW 4.4 litre V8 and the 225kW inline-six driving the xDrive35i. The current eight-speed automatic transmission also carries over.

BMW M Performance: BMW X6 M50d And X5 M50d

Along with its X5 M50d stablemate, the arrival of BMW's X6 M50d marks the Australian debut of the brand's new M Performance diesel models.

The German carmaker is trumpeting the new triple-turbo mill as the world's most powerful volume-produced six-cylinder diesel engine, delivering 280kW at 4000rpm and a huge 740Nm of torque between 2000-3000rpm.

Those figures represent a 55kW and 140Nm hike over the existing xDrive40d SUVs, and with a number of handling upgrades in the mix, there's little disputing that these are the new flagship models.

Matched with an eight-speed automatic Sports transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, BMW promises a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds for the X5 M50d, and 5.3 seconds for the X6 M50d.

Fuel consumption and emissions in the X5 version are listed at 7.5 l/100km and 199g/km, while the X6 lists 7.7 l/100km and 204g/km.

Upgrades include an enhanced bodyshell and powertrain mountings, along with revised Servotronic mapping for the hydraulic steering setup.

BMW's M division has also modified the electronically-controlled dampers and active anti-roll function in the Adaptive Drive system - the latter standard with the X6 M50d and optional with the family-focused X5 M50d.

Visual tweaks for the two diesel Ms include updated front bumprs with large air intakes and a 'Ferric Grey' metallic finish to the horizontal trim bars.

The mirror caps are also finished in Ferric Grey, and there's 20-inch light-alloy wheels, V8-styled tailpipes and, for the X6, the M powerdome can be spied on the bonnet.
