The new 2007 Toyota Corolla has received a 5-star Euro-NCAP rating in the last round of Euro-NCAP tests and will no doubt go on to receive a 5-star Aus-NCAP rating as well. Largely, it is deserved but there is one glaring omission…Electronic Stability Control. ESC is not even an option in the 2007 Corolla range. That aside lets look at what is included.

Passive safety

A seven SRS airbag package is available across the Corolla range. It is in fact standard on all but the base model Ascent where it is available as an option. The Ascent features dual front SRS airbags as standard.

The new Corolla has been manufactured using two grades of high-strength steel sheet to maximize body rigidity and passive safety while keeping weight within acceptable limits. The highly rigid body offers the following benefits:

• it creates a strong central safety cell;

• ride, handling and stability are improved;

• it reduces noise, vibration and harshness (NVH);

• it increases vehicle durability.

Toyota have carried over their ‘bolt-on’ body structure strategy first used in the Yaris hatchback during the last quarter of 2005. This provides greater pedestrian safety and allows for easier repair of low speed accident damage.

Passive safety is further enhanced by Corolla's comprehensive impact-absorbing structure for front, side and rear collisions. Unlike the current TK Barina which you can see being crash tested by clicking the link, the 2007 Corolla has been designed to minimize cabin deformation in the event of a frontal collision.

In the event of a collision the crash energy is dissipated via the front bumper reinforcement, front crush boxes, front side-members, under member, moment-cancel members, dash cross-members, floor tunnel side-members, rockers, front pillars and door inner reinforcements.

Side impacts have been given similar consideration and the side impact-absorbing structure makes use of high-strength steel reinforcements for the centre pillar outer, rocker outer reinforcement and rocker inner, along with side impact beams in the doors and roof reinforcements. Bulkheads are used where the main floor cross-members meet the rocker panels to transmit impact load to the cross-members.

Active safety

The 2007 Corolla features the following active safety features:

• ABS anti-skid brakes

• Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)

• Brake Assist (BA)

Braking performance has been improved in the 2007 Corolla by the fitment of a new brake package that includes 275mm by 22mm ventilated front discs with single-piston sliding calipers and 259mm by 9mm rear discs also with single-piston sliding calipers.
