Owners of Tesla's all-electric Roadster sports car have collectively driven past the 35 million kilometre mark, with Tesla Motors hailing the feat as validation of the car's appeal.

The passing of the 35m kilometre milestone makes the Tesla Roadster the most widely-used electric passenger car ever, with over 2300 Roadsters being delivered to owners in 32 countries - including Australia.

An Australian-owned Tesla Roadster has also broken the record for the greatest distance driven on a single charge: 501km.

“Our early owners join a worldwide group of thought leaders, helping lay the foundation that will make electric cars possible for everyone," said Tesla Motors Australian Regional Manager Jay McCormack

Local sales of the Roadster have also surpassed Tesla's expectations, with Australian stocks running low.

"Sales have been so successful it looks like we will follow North America and sell out about six months earlier than expected” said Mr. McCormack.

Data gathered from existing Roadster owners has also been used in the development of Tesla's first entirely unique model, the Model S luxury sedan.

The Model S is expected to reach North American customers in June, and Tesla projects a total production volume of 5000 cars for 2012.

Assembly of right-hand drive cars will commence sometime in 2013, with deliveries of Australian Model S' beginning not too long after.

With production in full swing, Tesla Motors expects to build up to 20,000 Model S' in 2013.
