Lamborghini unveiled the Urus concept in Beijing last month, but it didn't tell anyone which powertrain would propel the off-roader.

Speaking with industry paper Automotive News this week, development boss Maurizio Reggiani said that while a decision has not been made, something like Audi's twin-turbo V8 could find its way into the two tonne beast.

The Urus is based on rival Porsche's Cayenne architecture, which has also spawned the more prosaic VW Touareg and Audi Q7, as well as the more upmarket Bentley EXP 9 F (if it goes into production).

That architecture consists mostly of steel, meaning that with an aggressive weight target in focus, Lamborghini's V10 and V12 would be too heavy for the Urus.

The V8 has already found a home in the Audi RS range and the Bentley Continental. It is noted for its torquey nature and, crucially, is 13kg lighter than the Aventador's V12.

At 2140kg, a Cayenne S is already 140kg heavier than Lamborghini's two-tonne target, so Modena has to find every kilo it can to keep the car light.

Lamborghini's power output target of 'around 440kW' should also be achievable with the versatile bent eight.

The Urus is Lamborghini's second off-roader. The rugged LM002 - known affectionately as the Rambo Lambo, owing to its military origins - utilised the company's Countach-powering V12 engine.

After the Urus' Beijing unveiling, the post-show chatter was full of speculation as to which of Lamborghini's big naturally-aspirated engines would end up in the snout, so Reggiani's admission seems to exclude the Lambo V10 or V12 - for now, anyway.
