Entries in next weekend’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este ‘Concept Cars & Prototypes’ competition have once again exceeded that of previous years, strengthening the reputation of the event as a ’who’s who’ of current concept cars.
The ‘Concept Cars & Protoypes’ competition was originally intended as a sideline to the historic Concorso d’Eleganza’s main focus of classic automobilia.
In the years since its launch, however, the contest has been embraced by the world’s automakers and design houses as an opportunity to flaunt their latest and most unique concept cars.
Held on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, this year’s entry list includes concepts from Ford, Lexus, Alfa Romeo, and aspiring Croatian manufacturer Rimac, along with independent design houses; Bertone, Italdesign, Pininfarina, and Rinspeed.
The competition traditionally includes a few ‘surprise entries’ also.
Unlike the main event, which is judged by a panel of key figures from the automotive world, the Concept Cars & Protoypes competition is judged by attending members of the public.
The event is hosted by BMW, who will this year nostalgically display its ‘Turbo’ concept from 1972, which previewed the production M1 model (itself spawning the recent M1 Hommage concept) of the late 70s.
