If it weren't enough that Maserati will launch two new sedans and an SUV over the coming year, reports out of Italy suggest a mid-engined 'GranSport' sports car is on the way.

Taking on Porsche's 911 hero and the Audi R8, the new trident car is reportedly close to a green light, with a 2015 launch on the cards.

According to Italian paper Alvolante, the details have come directly from Maserati boss Harald Wester.

The report adds that the car would draw on technology from Fiat stablemates Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, utilising a version of the Alfa 4C's platform, with carbon fibre and aluminium construction, and power provided from any one of Ferrari's V8 engines.

Technology from the new Ferrari 458 Italia could also feature, although a price tag of around $200,000 will likely keep the more expensive Ferrari elements to a minimum.

The new 'entry level' sports car would likely contribute around 1500 to 2000 sales each year to Maserati's 50,000 sales-per-year goal.
