Drawn to the Audi A7 Sportback but deterred by the premium price tag? If you're in the US, there's a new alternative: the 2013 Avalon four-door coupe.

We won't see the Avalon name return to Australia however. The first-gen model made way for the Aurion, and alongside the Camry, the family car part of Toyota's local line-up is pretty well covered.

In the US, the fourth-generation Avalon continues as the flagship in Toyota's passenger car range, sitting above the Camry as the largest model in the sedan line-up.

Up front, the new Avalon takes on a design closely related to the new Camry and the outgoing Avalon, with the same stepped headlight design, V-like grille and sharp-cornered bumper.

In profile howver, the Avalon distances itself from the Camry and its predecessor with a coupe-like roofline, terminating in a short rear deck and long scalpel-shaped LED tail-lights.

Inside, the Avalon is treated to a more upmarket design, with a leather-wrapped dash and cup holder, shadow-chromed highlights and wood trim throughout.

Powertrains have not been detailed.

The new Avalon was designed at Toyota's Calty Design offices in California and Michigan, and production will begin in Kentucky later this year.

Watch for details on the Australian market's all-new Aurion sedan in the coming weeks.
