Once upon a time, back in the good ol' days, you could buy a brand-new Chevy Impala built in Australia.

It was a different beast back then, of course, subscribing to the same gargantuan dimensions as most American cars of the 60s, with power provided by the Corvette's 5.4 litre '327' engine.

These days, the average Australian's familiarity with the Impala is unlikely to go beyond the cop cars spied in the background of just about every American action flick since the 60s. (Not forgetting the Ford Crown Vic, of course.)

The Impala is still kicking around in the US, as a police patroller and as a passenger car, with the ninth-generation sedan now into its seventh year of production.

Now, GM has released a teaser image of the new 10th-generation Impala ahead of its New York Auto Show debut next month.

The image reveals a glimpse of what could be a more upmarket design, with a chrome-heavy glasshouse and a long C-pillar.

“The new Impala further strengthens Chevrolet’s passenger car lineup by giving consumers a full-size sedan that balances the desire for distinction with engaging driving dynamics," Chevrolet marketing VP, Chris Perry, said.

For now, GM has confirmed only that the new Impala is built on the stretched Epsilon II platform, which it shares with the new Cadillac XTS large sedan, along with most of the Caddy's components.

Whether the new Impala will go into service as a police vehicle is unclear, with the new Holden-built Chevrolet Caprice PPV already offered to law enforcement departments in the US.

Could we see the new Impala in Australia as the next-generation Commodore? Only time will tell.

Watch for the new Impala to debut in New York next month.
