2012 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID

Toyota Australia's all-new Camry line-up is now complete, with the debut this week of the new 2012 Camry Hybrid.

Like its petrol-powered siblings and its pioneering predecessor, the new Camry Hybrid is built in Australia for local sale, and for export to the Middle East and other markets.

Kicking off at $34,990 plus on-roads - $2000 less than the outgoing model - Toyota says that buyers can look forward to a boost in power, fuel economy and features.

Mechanical Package

For 2012, the new Camry Hybrid is powered by an Atkinson-cycle 2.5 litre petrol engine, replacing the existing 2.4 litre engine.

Combined as part of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive system, the engine and electric motors develop 151kW and 213Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 5.2 l/100km on the combined cycle.

Paired with the CVT automatic transmission, Toyota claims the Camry Hybrid will return figures of 5.7 l/100km in city driving, down from 6.9 l/100km, and highway figures of 4.9 l/100km, down from 5.2 l/100km.

Using one-third less fuel on the combined cycle than the petrol Camry, Toyota says that with fuel at $1.50 a litre, someone travelling 20,000km each year could save $2340 over three years.

The outgoing Hybrid Camry, with its 140kW 2.4 litre petrol-electric system, lists combined-cycle fuel consumption at 6.0 l/100km.

The 0-100km/h time is a claimed 8.0 seconds, bettering the 8.9 second sprint of the outgoing Hybrid Camry.

Separating the new Camry Hybrid from its predecessor is a new EV Drive system, allowing the car to be driven on electric power alone for up to 2.0km, at speeds up to 45km/h.

There is also new sound-absorbing materials in the engine compartment, along with an acoustic windscreen, and Toyota says that, as a result, the Camry Hybrid is quieter in the cabin than its petrol counterparts.

Features

As with the current Hybrid Camry, the 2012 hybrid is differentiated from its regular petrol siblings by Toyota's familiar blue-tinted badges, and a unique grille design.

Two trim grades will be offered: Camry H and Camry HL.

The same 151kW petrol-electric hybrid system drives both, with the two variants separated by their styling and equipment levels.

Both cars feature a unique 'Optitron' display in the dash, along with a six-speaker audio system and a 6.1-inch display.

Other standard features include an ECO driving indicator, dual-zone auto climate control air conditioning, smart entry wireless door lock, smart start, acoustic windscreen, reversing camera, mirror-integrated side indicators and, for the Camry H, 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Camry HL adds 17-inch alloy wheels with Bridgestone tyres, front foglamps, rear lip spoiler, chrome door handles and chrome rear garnish.

Inside, the HL gains leather accents and premium door trims, driver's seat memory, power front passenger seat, premium steering wheel and gear-shift knob, electro-chromatic rear-view mirror and a rear electric sunshade.

The audio system is upgraded to a JBL premium 10-speaker system with a seven-inch display, along with satellite navigation, live traffic updates and digital radio.

The reversing camera on the HL variant features a back-guide monitor, and rear parking sensors are also standard with the HL, along with blind-spot monitoring and automatic high beam.

Standard safety features for both models includes seven SRS airbags, seatbelt warnings for all five seats, Hill-start assist control, stability and traction control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist.

Storage capacity in the rear, thanks to a more compact battery pack, is now eight percent greater than in the outgoing model - up from 389 to 421 litres. Towing capacity is listed at 300kg.
