Pairing Volkswagen's efficiency-focused "BlueMotion" brand with the classic GT performance moniker, this new Polo variant brings sharp acceleration and miserly fuel consumption together in one advanced package.
Under the bonnet is the carmaker's new 1.4 litre mill, drawn from the new EA211 engine family - the petrol-powered counterpart to the EA288 diesel range announced this week, with both engines sharing the same mounting points.
Setting the new 103kW engine apart from the 1.4 engine in the older EA111 family is its "ACT" cylinder deactivation technology, previously the domain of larger engines.
Shutting down the second and third cylinders under low and medium engine load, Volkswagen says the ACT system reduces average fuel consumption to 4.7 l/100km - dropping to 4.5 when paired with the optional seven-speed DSG auto transmission.
At a constant speed of 50km/h in third or fourth gear, VW says fuel consumption can drop to just 1.0 l/100km. Even at 70km/h in fifth gear, average fuel consumption falls by 0.7 l/100km.
The system is activated at engine speeds between 1250 to 4000rpm, and at torque outputs between 25Nm to 100Nm - which Volkswagen reckons is representative of around 70 percent of all driving in the European driving cycle.
Despite its supermodel diet, Volkswagen promises a 0-100km/h time of 7.9 seconds for the BlueGT.
Volkswagen promises that the cylinder reactivation process is imperceptible to the driver, with the switchover occuring in half a camshaft revolution - around 13 to 36 milliseconds.
When the driver is caught in "non-uniform" driving situations, including stop-start traffic or a spirited drive through the hills, the system is deactivated.
Other elements from Volkswagen's BlueMotion catalogue include a stop/start system and battery regeneration.
The Polo BlueGT will hit European showrooms in July.
Speaking with TMR today, Volkswagen Australia's Jenny Wu said that discussions for a local debut have yet to begin, and it remains to be seen if the Polo BlueGT will be introduced here.
