Volkswagen could be preparing to reveal a production version of last year's Golf Cabriolet GTI concept at the Geneva Motor Show next month, if reports out of the UK this week are to be believed.

As a concept, the Cabrio GTI draws power from the GTI Edition 35's 175kW 2.0 litre turbo engine - a detuned version of the Golf R's 188/199kW mill.

There's also a pair of unique exhaust tips, custom wheels and a set of gloss-black flares and skirts wrapping the bottom of the concept.

Unless a last-minute power upgrade is due for the regular model (the all-new Golf is expected at Paris in August), the Cabriolet GTI would more likely get its guts from the 155kW engine that motivates in the GTI hatch.

The report of a Geneva debut for the production Cabriolet GTI comes from Britain's AutoExpress magazine. No source for the information is offered, but as a last hurrah for the current Golf range, a topless GTI could be just the ticket.

In Australia, the regular Golf Cabriolet is offered in just one trim grade, with power coming from Volkswagen's familiar 118TSI four-cylinder engine, producing 118kW and 240Nm of torque.
