Audi has confirmed that the new five-door A1 Sportback light car will make its Australian debut in mid-2012, with pricing and specifications to be confirmed closer to launch.

The A1 Sportback made its international market debut in Spain this week, entering as a more practical version of the existing three-door variant. The three-door has been on sale in Australia since late 2010.

While both bodystyles share the same 3954mm length and 2469mm wheelbase, the five-door A1 benefits from a taller roofline, giving rear passengers great headroom.

Backseaters also get more shoulder room, with the middle seat dropped in favour of a little breathing space and a pair of cup holders.

In five-door form, the A1 Sportback weighs in at 1065kg, about 25kg greater than the three-door.

Internationally, the A1 Sportback is offered with a full seven engine options: four diesel and three petrol, all four-cylinder and all turbocharged (and superchaged in the case of the 1.4 litre TFSI).

A start-stop system is also fitted as standard on all but the 1.6 litre TDI S tronic and the top-shelf petrol options.

The 1.6 litre TDI is available in two states of tune, one producing 66kW and 230Nm of torque, and the other delivering 77kW and 250Nm.

In entry-level 66kW form and paired with a five-speed manual transmission, the 0-100km/h run is covered in 11.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is listed at just 3.8 l/100km, bettering (just barely) the 3.9 l/100km of the MINI Cooper D.

Audi says the 77kW version will hit 100km/h in 10.7 seconds, with fuel consumption also at 3.8 l/100km.

A more powerful 105kW 2.0 litre diesel will hit the A1 line-up in the middle of the year, giving the diesel A1 a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds and fuel consumption figures of 4.1 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The three petrol engines include an entry-level 1.2 litre engine producing 63kW and 160Nm. Paired with a five-speed manual, the small four-cylinder promises a 0-100km/h time of 11.9 seconds, and fuel consumption figures of 5.1 l/100km.

A pair of 1.4 litre TFSI engines follow, with the less powerful option offering 90kW and 200Nm. The 0-100km/h run is listed at 9.0 seconds, and fuel consumption at 5.4 l/100km (5.3 for the automatic version).

Lastly, the range-topping model is also a 1.4 litre TFSI unit, producing a meatier 136kW and 250Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h run is over in 7.0 seconds, Audi says, and fuel consumption is listed at 5.9 l/100km.
