The Tesla Roadster showed us just how far the Lotus Elise platform can be taken, transforming the small sports car into a high-powered electric vehicle that shares just six percent of its parts with the original Lotus.

Now, as production of the Roadster draws to a close, a new Elise-based contender has stepped into the sports-EV picture: the Elektrus, by German outfit PG.

Developed together with designer Michael Frohlich, the Elektrus follows closely in the Roadster's tyre treads. Power is provided by an electric motor, drawing energy from a lithium-ion battery pack.

Like the Roadster, the Elektrus features a carbon-fibre skin to keep weight down, but one feature unique to PG's creation is a solar panel on the rear deck that sends additional energy to the battery pack, maintaining its charge.

PG says the car's electric motor is good for 202kW and 350Nm of torque, giving the Elektrus a claimed 0-100km/h time under three seconds, and a top speed close to 300km/h.

By comparison, the Tesla Roadster 2.5 boasts 215kW and 400Nm, with a 0-100km/h time of 3.7 seconds. (It will be interesting to see if the Elektrus' claimed figures prove accurate.)

PG promises a driving range of up to 350 kilometres - just 10km greater than the Roadster.

The company says it will produce only 667 cars - all for the European market - priced at just over $300,000.
