BMW Australia has announced the introduction of two new variants to the entry-level end of its new 2012 3 Series line-up, in the form of the 318d diesel and 320i petrol models.

The new options will join the already-announced 320d, 328i and 335i, bringing the price of entry into the new 3 Series range down from $60,900 to $56,400.

The new 3 Series range will kick off with the 318d, powered by a four-cylinder turbodiesel producing 105kW and 320Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel consumption is listed at 4.5 l/100km, and BMW says the diesel will propel the midsized sedan to 100km/h in 9.3 seconds.

The 318d's fuel consumption is identical to the 135kW/380Nm 320d, although the higher-spec car offers a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds.

Starting the petrol range is the new 320i, priced at $57,600. Power is provided by BMW's turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine, delivering 135kW and 270Nm of torque.

Equipped with an eight-speed Sports automatic with steering-mounted paddle shifters, the 320i lists a 0-100km/h time of 7.6 seconds and fuel consumption figures of 6.2 l/100km.

By comparison, the 328i - the next model up - gets a 180kW/350Nm turbo four, with a 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds in manual form. Fuel consumption figures are almost identical, at 6.3 l/100km with the auto.

I think the new front on this car looks really great. I think the grille and headlights look nicely chiselled and well crafted but the rest of it just looks like the old model - disappointing really.

Great looking exterior and the cabin has surely gotten back that Teutonic edge add all the gadget connectivity niceties Gen-Y are going to appreciate, 6-cylinder will be most lamented by the faithful.
