The next-generation Ford Mondeo has been given an early unveiling this week, appearing briefly in the latest update for the new model's dedicated iPad app.

Following in the tyre treads of the new Focus, the 2013 Mondeo has been developed as a global model under the carmaker's One Ford plan, wearing identical styling in each market.

In Europe and Australia, it will continue to wear the Mondeo badge, while the US market will welcome it as the new Fusion.

As the image above shows, the new Mondeo will carry the same coupe-like profile of its predecessor, adding the latest generation of Ford's "Kinetic" styling language, the company's new family grille and a sharp new headlight design.

According to US blog Carscoop, the new Mondeo will be offered with a choice of four engines, depending on the market.

Among them will be a pair of Ford's new EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engines, in 1.6 and 2.0 litre capacities - likely versions of the EcoBoost engines recently added to the current Mondeo line-up.

The petrol-electric drivetrains of the new C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi Plug-in Hybrid cars could also debut in the Mondeo, tackling the likes of the Toyota Hybrid Camry.

Front- and all-wheel-drive configurations are expected, although it is likely that the Australian-delivered models will stick with the current front-wheel-drive arrangement.

Keep an eye on TMR's Detroit Auto Show page, and watch for the new Mondeo to debut this week.
