Mitsubishi is busy working away on its next-generation Outlander SUV, inspired by the recent PX-MiEV and PX-MiEV II concepts.

While the MiEV concepts utilise a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, the new Outlander is expected to stick with conventional petrol and diesel hearts. Initially, at least.

A hybrid version of the new SUV has been expected since the first PX-MiEV was revealed in 2009, and a new report in Japan's Nikkei business paper this week suggests it could arrive as soon as 2013.

Details of the new ultra-green SUV and sources for the information were not revealed, although the report claims that the new hybrid will get a global debut in the year following its launch.

In concept form, the PX-MiEV II is powered by a 70kW 2.0 litre petrol engine, paired with two electric motors to produce a combined 120kW. Mitsubishi's new twin-motor four-wheel-drive system and Super All-Wheel Control is also featured.

The regular petrol and diesel versions of the new Outlander, its styling inspired by the PX-MiEV concepts, is expected to make its production debut in the coming year.
