Audi has revealed an all-wheel-drive hi-po version of its tiny A1 hatch, and while it might look like a concept, 333 of these will make their way to European homes.

The special A1 Quattro draws its urge from the bigger S3 performance hatch (and the Golf R), its 2.0 litre turbo engine delivering 188kW and a hefty 350Nm of torque.

Compare that to the front-wheel-drive A1 1.4 TFSI Sport's 136kW and 250Nm, and it's clear that Audi has bred (a select few of) its customers a proper monster.

The hard-tuned engine and a six-speed manual transmission gives the A1 Quattro a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds - bettering the Sport by more than a second - and a top speed of 245km/h.

Keeping the A1 Quattro on the straight-and-narrow is a set of modified MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, along with 8x18-inch wheels wrapped in 225/35 tyres and a modified ESP system.

The 'Little Quattro That Could' picks up a bunch of styling tweaks taken from the familiar Audi S performance range, but the S badge itself is noticeably absent.

Could Audi be planning an eventual series-production S1 flagship? Reports over the past year point to yes, and with only 333 of the A1 Quattro cars planned, an S model would be a welcome addition to the range.

As for Australia, we can keep on dreaming: the A1 Quattro will be built in left-hand-drive only, and you can bet all your euros that this one will be snapped up by eager buyers on the home continent.
