Hyundai is reportedly looking at introducing a rival for Volkswagen's popular Golf GTI, in the form of a turbocharged i30 three-door.

Based on the all-new i30 revealed revealed back in September, the boosted three-door would likely draw power from the company's new turbocharged 1.6 litre petrol engine.

The same engine will soon debut in the Veloster sports hatch - something of a Scirocco challenger in its own right - delivering 152kW and 265Nm of torque.

Along with the Veloster, Hyundai already offers the rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe in overseas markets, powered by a pair of 248kW and 260kW petrol engines.

The international arrival of both cars has been a major factor in Hyundai shaking its reputation for low-quality commuters, growing into a world-class manufacturer.

A turbo-charged i30 that could take the game right up to the benchmark Golf GTI might be just what the doctor ordered.

And with Kia reportedly planning to drop the same engine into a hot-hatch version of its next-generation Cee'd (or is that Cerato?), Hyundai would be wise to listen.
