When Kia's second-generation Cerato arrived in 2008, the stylish sedan offered a first look at design boss Peter Schreyer's vision for the future: sporty, and even a little desireable.

Despite its new good looks, a rush of sharp new models in the years since its arrival has pushed the Cerato to the back of the room, outclassed by the Sportage, Optima and Rio.

That's set to change, however. Because if the above artwork is accurate, the Cerato will soon be back at the front of the pack.

Obtained by enthusiast blog Kia World, the illustration points to a small sedan that draws its styling inspiration from the larger Optima, including the angled front and rear lights, and Schreyer's wide-open "Tiger nose" grille design.

The report adds that the new 'YD' Cerato will launch in 2012, however a recent media presentation at Kia's Korean head office revealed that we can expect a debut in 2013, pushing the boundaries of the usual new-model lifecycle.

The presentation included a brief look at an illustrated silhouette of the new sedan, along with an identical design in five-door hatch form for the new European-market Cee'd. We can likely expect the latter to hit Australia as the Cerato hatch.

As with the current model, the new Cerato will likely utilise the same platform underpinning the brand-new Hyundai i30 hatch and Elantra sedan.

A motor-show unveiling for the new Cerato will be sometime away, but watch for more details - and spy photos - to surface over the coming year.
