It's had a handful of styling and mechanical upgrades over its five-year life, but Ford's fourth-generation Mondeo will wave goodbye when its replacement steps up at January's Detroit Auto Show.

The 2013 Mondeo will debut as a global model, developed under Ford's ongoing OneFord project that calls for collaboration from Ford's various international offices.

It will be sold in Europe and Australia as the Mondeo, and in the US as the new Ford Fusion.

News of the new Mondeo's coming debut follows recent spy photos of a test car that, while heavily camouflaged, offered a strong look at the shape of the new model.

It is clear from the spy photos that the new model will carry a familiar tail-light design, along with the sleek coupe-like roofline of the current model and a more-upright and purposeful front end.

A sharp new headlight design is likely to feature on the new Mondeo, perhaps mirroring the style of the recent Evos concept and the current Taurus sedan in the US.

Expect the new Mondeo to pack the latest options in Ford's EcoBoost engine range, including the 149kW 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine that stars in the current model.

Ford has also released a new iPad and Android mobile app to drum up anticipation for the new Mondeo - catch the videos below for a glimpse of how they work.
