Die Katze is out of the bag: the new Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been given an impromptu unveiling, thanks to a series of scanned brochure pages that surfaced in the German press this week.

Blending the carmaker's new styling language with the grand-tourer lines of its predecessor, the new SL is the latest model to get Merc's upright grille design and back-set headlights.

At the rear, the new SL continues the theme of the outgoing model, with large wrap-around tail-lights extending into the rear quarter of the car, following the edge of the boot lid.

Inside, the 2012 SL-Class draws inspiration from the company's top-shelf SLS AMG, including the circular air-conditioning vents and the wide curved centre console.

The brochure pages reveal little else, although it is known that the new SL will feature the "Magic Sky Control" polarised glass roof that debuted with the smaller SLK convertible, along with the new "Magic Vision Control" window-wiper system.

There is also a new FrontBass system, which uses empty cavities in the front footwells to house a pair of bass speakers.

The carmaker says the new SL's bodyshell weighs a full 110kg less than before, thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in its construction.

Powertrain details for the new SL have yet to be revealed, but we can likely expect the high-spec SL 500 to utilise Merc's new 320kW/700Nm 4.6 litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

Watch for more details to surface in the coming weeks.
