Audi will soon offer a rival for BMW's X6 "Sports Activity Coupe" SUV, and a battle with the reported X4 could also be on the cards, according to industry paper Automotive News Europe.

Speaking with the paper this week, Volkswagen Group design boss Walter de'Silva was quoted as saying that the company's premium brand "will definitely launch a sportier crossover between the Q7 and the Q5".

The identity of the new model has not been revealed, but the "Q6" name has been kicked around in the press, following reports that the new SUV would slot in between the brand's current medium and large SUV offerings.

With de'Silva's comments this week however, it appears clear that the name is a lock - and buyers will be left with little doubt as to which of BMW's SUVs it will do battle with.

Volkswagen's design chief added that Audi is also considering the potential for a smaller SUV to take on the X4, which BMW boss Norbert Reithofer reportedly confirmed with German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport.

The X4 is expected to follow the X6 formula - on a smaller scale - measuring around the same length as the current X3, while taking on a more coupe-like roofline and a more sports-focused design.
