A new version of Ford's EcoSport compact SUV is on the way, and while the previous model focused on the South American market, this new one is set to go global.

While the new EcoSport has been spied testing on US roads this week, artist renderings of the jacked-up compact have been published by Brazil's Car & Driver, offering a glimpse at how the Escape-styled crossover could look.

Sharing its 'B3' platform with the Ford Fiesta (along with the Mazda2 and the European-market Ford Fusion), Ford has previously focused the EcoSport in developing markets.

With the company's new 'One Ford' plan calling for global market compatibility, the new EcoSport is likely to make its way to Europe and the US.

The EcoSport could also come to Australia, where it would enter the range beneath the coming Kuga SUV and face off against the likes of the Skoda Yeti and the Suzuki SX4, along with the larger Subaru XV, Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Dualis.

It remains to be seen however if the version that appeared online in India is the same EcoSport we can expect to see in Western markets.

Expect the new EcoSport to feature the same engine and transmission options offered with the Fiesta, although with a heavier body and and an all-wheel-drive system, more powerful powertrains may be called for.
