Volvo has released a quartet of illustrations for its next-generation XC90 large SUV, revealing a sleek new take on the styling of the brand's recent Concept You study.

While the face is clearly inspired by the Concept You, the big wagon's rear end is presented here with three different designs, suggesting there's still some decisions to be made at the back.

Details on the next XC90 are thin on the ground, although it has been confirmed that the new SUV will be the first model to be built on Volvo's new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA), detailed back in September.

Volvo says the new platform has been developed to allow a range of new models to be produced, from small cars through to the XC90 and a possible new large flagship sedan.

New models will be 100-150kg lighter than their predecessors, thanks to the extensive use of aluminium and high-strength steel in body and powertrain construction.

We can likely also expect to see Volvo's own version of the increasingly common Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS). Volvo's version will utilise a flywheel system on the rear axle.

The release of energy when braking triggers the flywheel, storing enough electrical energy to give the driver an additional 60kW when needed.

A debut for the new XC90 has not been announced, but with the current model now into its 10th year, the next generation will not be far away.
