The locally-developed Varley evR450 electric supercar will soon have a rival for the affections of patriotic motorheads: the Arcspeed Sports.

Originally revealed in 2006 with a Honda Integra drivetrain, the stillborn roadster is back with an electric heart - provided by Varley - and Arcspeed aims to have it on the market by late 2012.

The Varley-sourced electric motor produces the same 522Nm of torque that it delivers in the evR450, and Arcspeed promises the same 3.8-second run to 100km/h. A driving range of around 150km off one charge is promised.

The Sports is expected to carry a price tag "below $100,000", and while it's not the most inspiring thing to look at right now (Mazda3 headlights, Supra tail-lights?), there could be a new body on the way.

Whatever design the company settles on, we suspect more than a few buyers will be able to see beyond the Sport's styling.
