Holden has confirmed that the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV will come to Australia as the Colorado 7, just hours after the concept's unveiling at this week's Dubai Motor Show.

Going on sale in Australia in the first quarter of 2013, the Colorado 7 will figure among an overhauled Holden line-up that will include its Colorado pickup stablemate, the new Malibu sedan and the Volt plug-in hybrid.

“Colorado 7 will also offer excellent interior flexibility and comfort for up to seven passengers across a third row of seats," Holden Executive Director Marketing, Sales and Aftersales John Elsworth said.

“It will have the fuel-efficiency and interior comfort of a modern family SUV, along with the towing ability of a working vehicle and the off-road capability of a true 4X4. We’re confident it will have all bases well and truly covered.”

In concept form, the Colorado 7, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer, is powered by a new 2.8 litre turbodiesel engine - likely the same 132kW/470Nm mill that features in the international Colorado pickup range.

Like the Colorado pickup, the Colorado 7 features a body-on-frame design, and Holden promises solid off-road and towing performance for the big SUV.

The Colorado 7 is also expected to give Holden a genuine competitor in rural markets, where the old Rodeo-based Frontera proved a popular offering.

With Ford Australia believed to be working on an SUV version of its own new Ranger pickup, the timing for the Colorado 7 couldn't be better.
