2012 KIA RAY

It's not quite as sleek as the company's Ray plug-in hybrid concept, but Kia's new Ray city car could be a preview for another forward-thinking technology: the upcoming "TAM" electric car.

Looking at its boxy profile, you could be forgiven for thinking the Ray is little more than a Soul Junior, another Asian-market boxy city car. We suspect otherwise.

It's already known that Kia is putting the final touches to an electrified city car that its been developing under the working title TAM, and it's likely that the Ray is that car.

This week's Ray preview comes with zero technical details - a hint in itself.

Combine that with the light teal colouring that it shares with the earlier and similarly-boxy Naimo electric concept, and you get closer to some idea of what's to come.

The Ray shown here will only be sold in the Korean market, and Kia has confirmed the same for its electric vehicle - another hint.

Although, with that other right-hand-drive outpost the UK also eager to get its hands on Kia's new EV, an eventual Australian debut for the Ray is not out of the question.

Lastly, Kia's electric car is scheduled to make its debut before the year is out. That's right about now, so all signs are pointing to the Ray and the "TAM" project being the same car.

We'll have to wait for more details, but in the case of the Hyundai i10 BlueOn electric vehicle, energy is provided by a 16.4 kWh LiPoly battery, powering a 61kW electric motor. It's possible we could see a version of this powertrain driving the Ray.
