Mazda has pulled back the canvas on a new showcar at this week's SEMA event in Las Vegas, revealing the special MX-5 Spyder Concept.

Designed by Mazda's North American operations, the MX-5 Spyder features a number of styling tweaks, but the standout feature is the Grenadine Red soft-top stretching from the top of the windscreen to a pair of latches on the boot lid.

The Spyder has also been given a unique front bumper design, a pair of LED day-time running lights and a set of skirts and lips around the bottom of the body.

The whole package is lowered on 17-inch ADVAN RS light alloy wheels, wrapped in Yokohama 225/45/R17 rubber. Brembo brakes sit behind.

What we didn't know yesterday was what's driving the MX-5 Spyder concept.

Mazda has since confirmed that power is provided by the same 118kW 2.0 litre engine fitted in the regular roadster, modified to take BP's isobutanol biofuel.

There's also a Racing Beat header, intake and exhaust muffler package and a coilover suspension kit from MazdaSpeed.

Don't expect to see this MX-5 hitting showrooms soon, but the all-new model can't be too far away now...
