The Volkswagen group has been banging the drum for some time now on its plans to become the world's biggest carmaker by 2018.

With news this week that the group sold more cars in the first nine months of 2011 than for all of last year, it could get there sooner.

Skoda, Volkswagen's Czech subisidiary, has its own sales goals for 2018 - and it's an ambitious one. The number is 1.5 million sales per year; nearly double the 762,600 sales it managed last year.

There is a lot to look forward to however. Skoda has become a key priority for the Volkswagen group, and its recent MissionL concept and Citigo city car suggest a bright future.

Now, reports out of Europe point to plans for a set of new MPVs and SUVs to replace the current Yeti and Roomster models.

While the Yeti has only just hit Australian showrooms, it's been doing the rounds in Europe since 2009, and has proven popular - so a successor is no doubt in the works.

According to Britain's Car magazine, the Yeti will be replaced by two new SUVs: one roughly the same size as the current model, due in 2015, and a larger Passat-sized version in 2016.

The Roomster, expected to return to Australia next year, will reportedly be replaced by two MPVs, one similar in size to the Volkswagen Caddy and the other around the size of the larger Euro-market Sharan.

We can expect big things from Skoda in the coming years. The brand's European sales have boomed over the past year and local sales are finally finding some traction. At the end of September, Skoda had sold 1595 cars in Australia, compared to 1108 for the same period in 2010.
