2013 NISSAN ALMERA | 2013 NISSAN PULSAR

Nissan Australia has at least four new models on its radar for 2012, that's no secret. The new Patrol is on the way, and the all-electric Nissan Leaf will also make its long-awaited local debut in the new year.

A replacement for the Tiida small car, revealed in April, is also expected to arrive next year. Lastly, Nissan's "global sedan" looks set to arrive in mid-2012.

News today from Nissan Australia has touched again on its new four-model assault. There is a teasing twist, however: Patrol and Leaf are locked in, but the remaining two are described only as a "new small car" and the Nissan Almera.

New Small Car

A clear replacement for the Tiida, the "new small car" is likely to be the 2012 Tiida hatch revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year.

So then, what's behind the "new small car" code? Goodbye Tiida, that's what. While there is no official word about, Nissan Australia CEO Dan Thompson has hinted at the possible revival of the Pulsar name.

Speaking at last year's Australian International Motor Show, Mr Thompson said that Nissan Australia had lobbied for and won the right to bring the Pulsar name back, but a final decision has yet to be locked in.

It looks like that decision could still be sometime away (or it's been made and nobody's giving up the goods), but one thing looks clear: we can expect the sharp new hatch to arrive in 2012.

Nissan Almera

The biggest tease in today's news is word of the Almera name coming to Australia.

Internationally, the Almera name has been tied to past generations of the Pulsar - but with the small segment covered by the "New Small Car," the Almera will likely instead debut in Australia on the Sunny light sedan revealed last year.

Although long absent from the Australian market (where it appeared on only one generation of the car), the Sunny name has continued in various forms and markets - even appearing in place of the Pulsar/Almera name on the company's one-size-up hatch.

Speaking with TMR today, Nissan Australia's Jeff Fisher confirmed that the Almera - which is built on a version of the Micra's "V platform" and is already available with that name in Thailand - is no Micra Sedan.

"Almera is not anything to do with small car size or Pulsar size. It's off the V platform - the Micra platform - but it's a bit bigger than what would otherwise be a Micra sedan," Mr Fisher said.
