Maserati won't be the only Fiat brand with a Chrysler 300C-based sedan, if reports out of Europe this week are to be believed.

The latest talk is that Alfa Romeo is looking to launch a new flagship sedan in 2014 off the back of the 300C programme, alongside the next-generation Quattroporte.

According to Britain's Autocar magazine, a recent halt in Alfa's new model production hasn't stopped the Italian carmaker from exploring options for a new hero sedan, above the upcoming 159-replacing Giulia.

With a view to firming up the brand's bonafides as a prestige marque, the plans for a new large sedan look to have replaced Alfa's recently scrapped SUV project.

The report adds that the new model will be built in the US, right beside the 300C - a tactical move reportedly designed to give US buyers greater confidence in Alfa Romeo's return to the North American market.

For now, the only new car we'll see from Alfa in the near future will be a mid-sized SUV, scheduled to arrive in 2013. A facelifted MiTo will arrive around the same time, followed by the five-door MiTo in late 2013.
