2012 HYUNDAI I40 TOURER

Hyundai's all-new i40 Tourer wagon has landed in Australia. This follows its local unveiling in Melbourne at July's 2011 Australian International Motor Show.

Designed and engineered in Germany for the European market, the i40 Tourer gives Hyundai a wagon companion for the popular i45, pitching it against the wagon versions of the Mazda6 and Ford Mondeo.

The i40 Tourer is available in Hyundai's familiar trim levels: the entry Active, mid-range Elite and the top-shelf Premium.

Inside, the i40 Tourer features a dash design and layout largely from the i45 sedan. The steering wheel design though is entirely different to any in the brand's current range.

The i40 Tourer is offered in Australia with two engines; a 2.0 litre direct-injected (GDI) petrol engine and a 1.7 litre CRDi turbodiesel.

The four-cylinder 2.0 litre petrol engine produces 130kW at 6500rpm and 213Nm of torque at 4700rpm.

Fuel consumption figures are listed as 7.7 l/100km for the six-speed automatic (Elite and Premium, 7.5 for Active) and 6.8 l/100km for the six-speed manual (Active only).

The four-cylinder 1.7 litre diesel engine produces 100kW at 4000rpm and 330Nm of torque for the manual, 320Nm for the auto (between 2000-2500rpm for both).

Fuel consumption for the diesel is listed at 6.0 l/100km for the six-speed auto-equipped Elite and Premium, and 5.6 for the six-speed auto Active. Fuel consumption for the manual is 4.7 l/100km, available with the Active only.

Suspension is managed by MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear.

There are two brake packages. The Active is fitted with 300mm ventilated discs at the front and 284mm solid discs at the rear, while the Elite and Premium get 320mm ventilated discs up front and 300mm solids at the rear.

Safety features for the i40 Tourer include Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), nine airbags, LED daytime running lights and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS).

The i40 Tourer will have its media launch event early next month. TMR will be attending, watch for our 'first drive' review.
