Skoda's local line-up gets a much-needed boost this week with the launch of the Fabia hatch, giving the Czech brand a competitor in Australia's growing light car segment.

Kicking off the two-car range at $18,990 is the Fabia - no special variant name here - while the style-focused Monteo Carlo leads the duo at $21,990.

The Fabia and Fabia Monte Carlo are both powered by Volkswagen's 77TSI 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 77kW at 5000rpm and 175Nm of torque between 1500 and 4100rpm.

Both variants are paired with a five-speed manual transmission, with fuel consumption figures listed at 5.5 l/100km.

All manual-equipped Skoda cars include a gearshift indicator: an arrow on the dashboard screen suggests when to change gears, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient rev range.

The Fabia's three-part subframe features McPherson struts up front and a multilink arrangement at the rear. Braking is managed by ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear.

A seven-speed DSG automatic and other engine variants will be available in 2012, although exact dates have not been confirmed.

Fabia RS coming in 2012

The range will get a true master in 2012, when the performance-focused Fabia RS arrives, drawing power from the same 132kW/175Nm 1.4 litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine driving the popular Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Front foglights are standard, along with cruise control, a multi-function trip computer and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Optional equipment for the entry Fabia includes rear parking sensors, climate control, the 'Swing' radio system with mobile device interface (USB, mini-USB, iPod), 15-inch alloy wheels and an electric glass sunroof.

Inside, the Monteo Carlo features a choice of black or black and red sports seats with extra side support.

There's also black roof lining, a perforated leather steering wheel with red contrast stitching and a leather handbrake and gearstick gaiter with red stitching.

Standard safety features across the two-car line-up include six airbags (dual front, front side and curtain) and electronic stability control (including ABS, ASR, EBD and Brake Assist).
