Fiat has unveiled the all-new 2012 Panda city car ahead of its Frankfurt Motor Show debut next week. The new model replaces its 2003-born precessor and marks the third generation since the the first Panda appeared in 1980.

The new Panda is built on an updated version of Fiat's 'Mini' platform, which also underpins the Fiat 500 and Ford's European-market Ka city car.

On the styling front, the 2012 Panda rounds out the corners of the outgoing model, continuing many of its styling themes - including the quirky rear-quarter window.

Inside, there's a circuit-like dash design, with an integrated cubby in the front passenger end.

A cube theme predominates the cabin, from the dash and steering-mounted controls, to the top of the gear shifter, the door handles and the seatbacks.

In Europe, the new Panda will be offered from launch with six engines, ranging from a 48kW naturally-aspirated and 63kW turbocharged 900cc two-cylinder petrol engine, through to 1.2 and 1.3 litre four-cylinders and an LPG-equipped 1.2 litre engine.

Each of the six engines will be offered with a five-speed manual transmission, which will be followed in 2012 by a 'dualogic' automatic transmission and a pre-collision system.

With the tiny 500 already on sale in Australia as Fiat's only locally-available passenger car, distributor Ateco has confirmed that the Panda is unlikely to make its way to our shores.
