Volvo's stop/start technology, already available with a number of its manual transmission-equipped models, will soon begin appearing in its automatic models.

The system will initially be rolled out with Volvo's five-cylinder 2.0 litre D3 turbodiesel, powering European-market variants in the S60/V60, V70 and S80 ranges.

As with the systems offered by other carmakers, Volvo's stop/start system switches off the engine when the car is completely stopped, cancelling out pointless fuel consumption while the vehicle is idle.

The Volvo system utilises a brake pressure management program to determine when to activate the stop/start feature, while an electric pump maintains oil pressure in the transmission while the engine is stopped.

For the D3 engine, the stop/start system is expected to reduce fuel consumption by around 0.4 l/100km and CO2 emissions by 10 g/km.

“Continuously reducing CO2 emissions from conventional powertrains is an important part of our DRIVe Towards Zero emissions. It’s the most efficient way to cut CO2 emissions throughout our model range in the short term” Volvo’s Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Peter Mertens said.

It is unclear at this stage when the system will filter out to Volvo's other engines, or when it will come to Australia's auto-equipped Volvos, but a model update is likely in 2012.
