Volkswagen's 103 TDI turbodiesel engine is making the hop to another of Skoda's Australian offerings, with the launch this week of a new entry-level line-up in the 2012 model-year Superb range.

The four-cylinder 2.0 litre diesel engine will power the new Superb 103 TDI, taking on Australia's large sedan market with a $38,990 starting price for the Ambition sedan - the same price as the petrol-powered 118 TSI.

Already available with the Octavia, the smaller diesel engine gives the Superb range the advantage of having the only large European diesel in Australia for under $40,000.

The 103 TDI range tops out with the Elegance 4x4 Sedan at $48,490 and the Elegance 4x4 Wagon at $50,490.

Producing 103kW and 320Nm of torque (1750-2500rpm) and mated to a six-speed DSG automatic transmission, the small diesel lists fuel consumption figures of 6.1 l/100km for the front-wheel-drive variants and 6.4 l/100km in 4x4 form.

Standard features for the entry-level 103 TDI Ambition include dual-zone climate control, multi-function trip computer, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, front foglights with cornering function, rear parking sensors with optical display and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, gearshift knob and handbrake.

In wagon form, the 103 TDI Ambition also gets Volkswagen's Park Assist parallel parking system.

Safety features include dual front, front-side, rear side, side curtain and driver's keen airbags, for a total of nine. There is also Electronic Stability Control, ABS brakes and Anti-Slip Regulation, along with a dual-rate brake booster for extra emergency stopping power.

Skoda will be looking to the Superb 103 TDI range to boost the large family car's sales. In July, Skoda sold just 85 of its Superb cars, compared to 1835 and 3551 for the Commodore and Falcon - although the Holden and Ford benefit from high fleet sales.

Other movers in the less-than-$70,000 large car segment include the Toyota Aurion (778 in July) and the Honda Accord (265).
