Images purported to be BMW's next-generation 2012 3 Series sedan have surfaced online this week, obtained by enthusiast website BMWFAQ.

The images offer the first look at the new 3 Series, previously spied in heavy camouflage.

As expected, the new 'F30' 3 Series draws its styling inspiration from the new 5 Series, with an upright grille, swept-back headlights and a raised bonnet with prominent creasing.

Through the profile, the new 3 maintains a flat belt-line and a subtle character line along the top of the doors.

With an international unveiling still some months away (March 2012 is expected), technical details for the new 3 Series remain a tightly-held secret at BMW headquarters.

Engine options are expected to include turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in 328i spec, and BMW's turbocharged six-cylinder engine for the top-shelf 335i.
