Ten of the first combinations in the Northern Territory's new series of general issue number plates will be auctioned off this week, in the name of charity.

Number plates CA 00 AB to CA 00 AK from the NT’s new number and letter combination series will be auctioned on eBay by The Smith Family children’s charity.

The very first plate, CA 00 AA, has been presented to the National Road Transport Hall of Fame.

The move to the new combination comes after 32 years of vehicle registrations under the current (and exhausted) series, which is made up of six numbers.

The new plates will stick with the Territory's well-known "Outback Australia" slogan.

"It is very popular with Territorians," Transport Minister Gerry McCarthy said.

"I think certainly it is a great iconic slogan to get around the Territory and interstate, to show people we are the true outback."

The auction is hosted online at eBay, and will run until midday 29th July 2011. Visit the auction page here: http://bit.ly/NTplateAuction
