Car park giant Wilson has announced the launch of its online booking service, Book A Bay, allowing drivers to secure a spot before leaving home - and three months in advance.

For now, the service is available at eight Wilson sites in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. If the trial is successful, the company plans to expand the service to more of its 200 sites.

Logging onto the Book A Bay website allows users to select a date, expected entry and exit times and the preferred site. A credit card must be nominated, and inserted when passing through the entry gate at the site.

Using the online service will cost motorists an extra 50 cents, and overstaying the booked time will be charged at the normal casual rates.

In the trial stages, users of the Book A Bay service can only pay for a spot during the 'early bird' periods, along with evenings and weekends. Peak parking times will become available in the future.

"It's for the peace of mind of not having to worry about driving around and searching for the cheapest rate," Wilson Parking National Sales Manager Mark Johnson said.

"More and more customers expect the convenience of paying over the internet."
