Audi's fire-breathing R8 GT supercar - an even more powerful track-ready version of the range-topping V10-powered R8 5.2 FSI - made its local debut at this week's Australian International Motor Show.

If you were keen to invest in this incredibly limited-edition supercar, you can put your cheque book away: all five R8 GT cars allocated to Australia have already been sold.

At $470,700 Australian dollars, the R8 GT is a good deal pricier than the 'regular' $392,200 R8 5.2 FSI - and nearly double the V8-powered $284,400 R8 - but it's also a whole lot more car.

On the power front, Audi has extracted a further 27kW from the big V10, boosting output to 418kW. The bigger number comes courtesy of tweaks to the engine electronics, leading also to a small increase in torque - up 10Nm to 540Nm at 6500rpm.

The 0-100km/h sprint is now covered in 3.6 seconds (3.9 for the regular R8 V10), and top speed is up to 320km/h (versus 316km/h).

Thanks to its aluminium spaceframe, the R8 was already close to its optimum weight. Nonetheless, Audi has managed to cut a further 100kg from the supercar's usual 1625kg kerb weight by swapping a number of aluminium panels for carbon fibre versions. There is also a thinner windscreen, and a polycarbonate rear window.

If you missed out on ordering an R8 GT, there's still hope in the form of the R8 GT Spyder. Best you get in Audi's ear early though - we're only getting five of the Spyders too.

Audi R8 e-tron Concept Shown At 2011 Australian International Motor Show

Alongside the R8 GT on the Audi stand at AIMS this week is the petrol-powered supercar's electrified cousin - the R8 e-tron concept.

Gone is the red hue of the super-EV on debut back in 2009, in its place a fiery eye-catching 'Samoa Orange'.

The story also changes 'under the bonnet': the R8 e-tron concept is propelled by four electric motors - two on each axle. Output is listed at 230kW - far from the massive figures of today's petrol-powered supercars - but thanks to the unique benefits of electric motors, torque is rated at a phenomenal 4500Nm.

The concept car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and goes from 60 to 120 km/h in 4.1 seconds.

Audi says the R8 e-tron is capable of a driving range of 248km from one charge - although constant five-second bolts to 100km/h will undoubtedly drag that figure down a little.

According to Audi, the R8 e-tron is on-track for its planned 2012 production debut.
