JAGUAR XF ESTATE

Talk of a wagon version of Jaguar's XF has been doing the rounds for some time now, but new reports this week suggest that development of the XF Estate has at last been given the green light.

Speaking with CarSales this week, the XF's Vehicle Engineer Manager, Andrew Whyman reportedly confirmed that a wagon body for the big cat is "on the cards."

Whyman added that Jaguar design boss Ian Callum is planning something different and a unique look for the XF wagon but was not moved to discuss dates or pricing.

Whether Whyman's comments are rock-solid, or designed as a deflection, is a little hard to tell. Reports in the past year have pointed to other Jaguar high-ups - including global brand boss Adrian Hallmark - 'confirming' a new 3 Series competitor, a new convertible and a Land Rover-based SUV.

Despite the relative success of the XF sedan, poor sales for Jaguar's last X-Type wagon could make the XF Estate a tough sell internally to Jaguar bean-counters.

In Australia, Jaguar sold 43 XF sedans in May, compared to 205 Mercedes-Benz E-Class cars (which includes a cabriolet, coupe, sedan and wagon), 111 BMW 5 Series cars and just 30 of Audi's A6.
