Peugeot's updated-for-2012 308 small car range made its local sales debut at today's Australian International Motor Show opening, alongside the brand-new 508 Sedan and Touring range.

The update brings an extensive styling update to the 308 Hatch, 308 CC convertible and 308 Touring wagon, along with updated powertrains and the addition of a new micro-hybrid e-HDi variant.

Up front, the 308 range gets Peugeot's new and less-cheerful face, first previewed by the sporting SR1 concept and the new 508 sedan.

Peugeot's updated lion emblem features prominently at the front and rear and there are also new wheel designs across the range.

Styling updates are less obvious in the cabin, limited to new colour and trim choices for seats and dash.

In Australia, the updated 308 is offered with a range of Euro V-compliant engines, including the entry-level 1.4 litre VTi petrol engine, along with the 1.6 litre VTi petrol and 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

Depending on spec, transmissions include five- and six-speed manual transmissions, and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

Fuel consumption for the petrol engines ranges from 6.3 l/100km for the 1.4 litre engine, to 7.6 l/100km for the auto-equipped 1.6 litre turbo.

On the diesel front, two tunes of Peugeot's 2.0 litre e-HDi FAP engine will be offered, combined with a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed automatic.

Safety features for the new 308 include ABS with electronic brake force distribution (EBFD), Electronic stability program (ESP), Emergency brake assist (EBA), 6 air bags on the hatch and Touring and 4 on the CC, extractible safety hoops on the CC in the event of rollover, 3-point seat belts with belt not fastened or unfastened acoustic warnings.
