BMW's futuristic Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid concept will make its big-screen debut in the upcoming Mission: Impossible 4, and today's new preview offers a first glimpse at the concept's role.

The brief spot of BMW product placement is not the first time a carmaker has offered up a futuristic concept for a Tom Cruise film: an equally sleek one-off Lexus featured in Cruise's Minority Report film way back in 2002.

Unlike the Lexus however, the Vision EfficientDynamics is more than a mere concept: it is also the progenitor for BMW's upcoming i8 hybrid, slated for a 2013 unveiling.

BMW has yet to reveal a single shred of detail on the i8, but in concept form, the Vision EfficientDynamics combines a 1.5 litre diesel engine with two electric motors to create 245kW and a 4.8 second 0-100km/h time.

The timing of the Mission: Impossible 4 trailer could not be better for those heading to this week's Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne, with the Vision EfficientDynamics concept confirmed to appear on BMW's stand.

The Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) opens at 6pm on Friday 1 July and runs through until Sunday 10 July at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This week's announcements for AIMS have included the 2012 Kia Rio hatch, Subaru's Eyesight safety technology and the Renault Fluence ZE electric sedan.

Other new models and concepts confirmed for the 2011 AIMS include the 2012 Subaru Impreza, Toyota Prius V and Prius C, the Suzuki Swift S-Concept, the Peugeot 508, the Range Rover Evoque, the Toyota FT-86 II Concept, the 2012 Audi A6 and the 2012 Jaguar XF.

Appearances have also been confirmed for the all-new Lamborghini Aventador, the Lexus LF-Gh concept, the Mazda Shinari concept, and a preview of Australian carmaker JOSS Developments' upcoming JT1 supercar.
