Rolls-Royce's imminent expansion of their lineup is expected to at least double overall vehicle sales for the British automaker, with Rolls-Royce CEO Ian Robertson pinning much of the company's commercial hopes on the upcoming RR4 'Baby Phantom'.

The so-called "entry level" model will still be far out of reach of the common man, but at an estimated price of between $260 000 and $320 000 the RR4 is still a lot more affordable than its big sister the Phantom. Mr Robertson believes the RR4 'Baby Phantom' will more than double Rolls-Royce sales - which currently sit around the 1000-per-year mark - and will help broaden the brand's reach and appeal.

Of course, we're using the term 'Baby' quite loosely here. The RR4 will be based upon BMW's 7-series platform and is expected to tip the scales at a portly 2.2 tonne. Previous reports mentioned the RR4's powerplant as being "unique to Rolls-Royce", however current rumours are circulating that see it powered by a twin-turbocharged version of BMW's 4.4-litre V8. Other theories put a sub-5-litre V12 under the bonnet, with a diesel being offered as an option (how terribly blue collar!). The rest of the driveline still has a big question mark hovering over it, but considering the RR4's chief competitor the Bentley Continental Flying Spur has all-wheel-drive, the Baby Phantom may also feature all-paw technology.

The RR4 is slated to hit the showrooms sometime in 2010.
