Following news earlier this year of its coming, Ford Australia has announced local pricing for its new EcoBoost-powered Mondeo variants.

Available in the mid-range Zetec and range-topping Titanium hatch variants only, the 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine will not make it into the entry LX or any of the wagon variants.

Ford will also do away with the petrol version of its Zetec wagon, leaving only the 2.3 litre Duratec petrol engine for the LX wagon and the 2.0 litre diesel engine for the LX, Zetec and Titanium wagons.

The debut of the new EcoBoost engine also comes with a price increase: an extra $1500 for the Zetec, and another $1050 for the Titanium.

Power for the 2.0 litre EcoBoost engine is rated at 149kW at 6000rpm, with 300Nm of torque available between 1750-4500rpm.

The new engine replaces the 2.3 litre Duratec petrol engine in Zetec and Titanium models, giving a 26 percent increase in power and a 44 percent increase in torque (over the 118kW and 208Nm of the Duratec).

Paired with Ford's PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission, the EcoBoost engine uses just 8.0 l/100km of petrol, compared to 9.5 l/100km for the outgoing engine.

“We believe that these [EcoBoost] engines will provide customers with a genuinely attractive alternative to diesel or hybrid power units, delivering highly competitive fuel economy and cost-of-ownership, along with the responsive performance and wide rev range that have made petrol engines the favoured choice for so many drivers," Ford Australia boss Bob Graziano said.

The Mondeo EcoBoost is expected to be followed in 2012 by Ford's long-awaited Falcon EcoBoost. Details remain a tightly-held secret, but the four-cylinder Falcon will likely get the same 177kW/320Nm engine powering Volvo's S60 T5 and XC60 models.
