Infiniti may soon take the sports coupe battle down a segment, with reports this week suggesting Nissan's luxury marque will introduce a sub-G37 coupe to tackle the BMW Z4 and Audi's TT.

Unlike the G37, the new coupe would reportedly be a dedicated two-seater (similar to, but smaller than, Nissan's 370Z), utilising a traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Interestingly, a report by Britain's Auto Express claims that, despite Nissan's extensive sports-car expertise, the Japanese brand has called on Lotus to assist in the small coupe's development.

Engine options remain unclear, and although the Nissan 370Z's 3.7 litre V6 engine would be a tight fit, the big six would give the small coupe its best chance at taking on its European rivals.

A lower-output variant could also be in the works, utilising Nissan's smaller 2.5 litre V6 engine, or a Renault-Nissan Alliance turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The reports point to a 2012 Geneva Motor Show debut. Watch this space.
