Ferrari and Lamborghini aren't the only players in the supercar segment, but the rivalry between the two Italian brands has long captivated fans on both sides of the fence.

Both companies have recently revealed brand-new models; Ferrari's oddly-styled and all-wheel-drive FF, and Lamborghini's Murcielago-replacing Aventador.

Reports this week suggest that the bull and stallion are now preparing to add another new model to the ranks.

According to Motor Trend magazine, Ferrari will skip the traditional upgrade route for the 599 GTB Fiorano - which already counts the HGTE and GTO variants in its line-up - moving straight into new-model territory.

The report claims that the leap in styling and technology between the 612 Scaglietti and the new FF has inspired Ferrari to go all-new across the range.

The replacement for the 599 will reportedly do without the FF's all-wheel-drive layout, but rather than adopt the same 'shooting brake' styling, it will maintain a more traditional supercoupe look.

The report adds that a version of the FF's 485kW 6.3 litre V12 will drive the new model, expected to make its first appearance late next year.

To Lamborghini. Reports have swirled for some time that the 'Raging Bull' would put its batmobile-like Sesto Elemento into production. New reports this week suggest it's been greenlit, albeit in limited numbers.

British magazine Autocar claims that Lamborghini has approved a run of just 20 cars, all for racetrack (or museum) duties only.

Power will reportedly come from the 400kW+ 5.2 litre V10 driving the Gallardo, rocketing the 995kg supercar to 100km/h in a neck-snapping 2.5 seconds.

Price? A cool AU$2.6 million, the report claims - and the odds are good that if you want one, you'd best be an existing Lamborghini customer.
