The next-generation 2012 BMW M5 may bring more than one first when it debuts in the coming months.

Already the first M5 to benefit from forced induction, new reports out of Europe suggest BMW will also offer an option all-wheel-drive package for the flagship 5.

BMW has offered only a few details for the new M5 ahead of its launch, but according to British magazine Autocar, the carmaker is planning a high-end performance variant that will include a version of BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

With power figures from the M5's twin-turbo 4.4 litre V8 rumoured to be in the neighbourhood of 430kW, an xDrive package could be a welcome option for owners not keen on tail-happy hooning - while also offering additional safety on poor surfaces or wet weather.

The 2012 M5, revealed in concept form at last month's Shanghai Auto Show, is set for a market debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
