BMW Australia has announced its brand-new 'F12' 6 Series Convertible, available as the 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 650i from May, and the twin-turbo six-cylinder 640i, on sale from August.

“The 6 Series Convertible is the jewel in the crown of BMW’s open top performance car offering, and with both models having such high standard specification, it is a particularly compelling value package for Australian customers,” BMW Australia Managing Director, Phil Horton said.

“We expect this second generation 6 Series Convertible to lure customers from other exotic marques on the grounds of its blending elegant design and unrivalled performance.”

The two-car range starts at $194,300 (plus on-road costs) for the 640i, offering 235kW and 450Nm of torque. On the other side of $200k is the 650i, priced at $248,300 (and costs) and offering a hefty 300kW and 600Nm for your spend.

In the previous generation 6 Series, the 650i was powered by a 4.8 litre V8 producing 268kW and 487Nm of torque.

For the new models, the 0-100km/h sprint is knocked over in 5.7 seconds for the 640i, while the 650i will cover the distance in 5.0 seconds.

Fuel consumption for the 650i is listed at 10.7 l/100km, and the 640i lists a return of 7.9 l/100km.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard for both cars, combined with steering-mounted shift paddles for manual control.

Fuel-saving technologies in the new 6 Series include Brake Energy Regeneration, High Precision Injection, Electric Power Steering, Auto Start/Stop and Air Vent Control.

Bigger in all directions that its predecessor except up, the new 6 Series is 75mm longer, 40mm wider and 10mm shorter top-to-bottom than the outgoing 'E63', while its wheelbase has also stretched to 2855mm.

Features

Standard equipment for both variants includes Dynamic Drive Control, 19-inch alloy wheels, Cruise Control with brake function, adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights, Internet, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

Other standard features across the range include lumbar support, seat heating, Navigation System Professional, Rear View Camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, Sports Seats (650i features Comfort Seats) and a full colour Head-Up Display.

Standard specification for the 650i will include Adaptive Drive, Comfort Seats, Surround View, TV function, Automatic soft-close function for doors, Professional HiFi System and seat ventilation for the front seats.

For both models, a new free-standing 10.2-inch screen is featured in the cabin, rising up from the dash for both the driver and front passenger to view.

Adaptive Drive, which incorporates Dynamic Damper Control and the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation system, is fitted as standard for the 650i, and as an option for the 640i.

Four driving modes are featured with the Adaptive Drive system (Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+), adjusting variable damper settings to suit the road surface and driver preference.

Both models can also be fitted with Parking Assistant, along with the new DAB+ Radio Tuner announced in April.

BMW’s Integral Active Steering is also available as an option, designed to reduce the turning circle of the car at low speeds and optimise cornering at higher speeds.

As with its predecessor, the new 6 Series Convertible is fitted with a fabric roof, opening electronically in 19 seconds and closing in 24 seconds - doing so at speeds up to 40km/h.

Storage space for the Convertible is limited to 300 litres with the roof open and 350 with the roof in place.
