Nissan's all-new 2012 Tiida made its debut at the Shanghai Auto Show this week, replacing the six year-old first-generation model - itself a successor to the Pulsar.

The new Tiida is expected to debut in Australia sometime in 2012, and its arrival may also mark the departure of the Tiida name - and the return of the Pulsar badge.

While no official word has been offered, Nissan Australia CEO Dan Thompson has hinted at the possible revival of the Pulsar name.

Speaking at last year's Australian International Motor Show, Mr Thompson said that Nissan Australia had lobbied for and won the right to bring the Pulsar name back, but a final decision has yet to be locked in.

Shown here in its Chinese-market form, Nissan has yet to confirm that this is the same car we'll see on our roads. An Australian debut for this Tiida is likely however, with launches planned in 130 countries by 2014.

Nissan Australia also confirmed recently that the new Sunny small car - the Tiida's replacement in the US (known there as the Versa) - will not be Australia's new Tiida, but rather a possible sedan counterpart to the new Micra hatch.

Full details for the new Micra have yet to be revealed, although it is known that the new Tiida's wheelbase is 100mm longer than its predecessor - a move intended to improve rear legroom, thanks to the car's 'young family' target market in Asian countries.

In China, the new Tiida will be powered by Nissan's trusty 1.6 litre HR16DE four-cylinder petrol engine, producing between 81 to 84kW depending on specification. Mechanical details for western-market variants have not been revealed.
